Curtains are available to satisfy various needs from smoke control, fire control, or used to contain the agents used in fire suppression systems where openings appear in walls or doors, to ensure that the correct concentration of fire suppressant is held for the required time period. They are available in various materials designed to meet British Standard requirements from 30 minutes, 2 and up to 4 hours, dependant on system requirements and specification. These are available configured to be activated automatically from a fire detection system, but can be designed to be operated manually or mechanically. The most simple form of curtain is operated via a low voltage trip assembly (usually 24V DC) activated via a fire alarm system. Upon activation the curtain will drop, covering over the opening. Pneumatic, and mechanical activation methods are also available. Where system monitoring is essential, then an electronic system is chosen. More sophisticated activation arrangements can be designed to enable the curtain to either drop via a system of weights, or be lowered via a low voltage motor. Power supplies including standby systems can be supplied to power the curtain in the event that the mains power becomes interrupted. AFS can supply all types of interfacing equipment. Smoke \ fire control curtains are used in many locations including ceiling voids for fire zone separation, smoke control in shopping centres, individual fire zone separation, atriums and generator rooms.
